Guardian Revival’s Another Summit program is an Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) program for military & first responder veterans as well as community members. Another Summit offers a peer-to-peer networking opportunity for veterans to get outdoors and connect with veteran mentors and community members through hiking, backpacking, and other structured outdoor activities in the Hudson Valley Region of New York.

Another Summit is an intentionally designed OAE program that focuses on equity and inclusion through each of our six elements:
1) training for our peer leaders (outdoor leader training);
2) recruiting willing participants from our local communities;
3) formation of cohorts (groups) using a continuity of care model;
4) outdoor activities designed using outdoors for all ideology and experiential philosophy;
5) exposure to nature and ecological literacies; and
6) group processing of our time spent together.

The transition back to civilian life is difficult for many military veterans. In addition to coping with physical injuries, veterans often must deal with mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These can take several months to manifest and last for extended periods, contributing to interpersonal conflict and substance abuse. Managing on-going mental health problems can be particularly challenging due to the negative perceptions veterans have about mental health treatment and the uncertain efficacy of many conventional therapies.

Underserved and underrecognized, the first responder community is often overlooked and underserved when it comes to mental health. Law Enforcement, Firefighters, and EMS personnel routinely witness horrific events that ordinary people don’t. These experiences can lead to mental health issues, including PTSD and depression—even suicide. Statistics reveal that more firefighters and law enforcement officers die by suicide than in the line of duty every year.
