Fieldcraft 101: Outdoor Survival Skills
Join Another Summit on a two-day fieldcraft weekend course, taught by Jon Turner, a US Marine Veteran from Vermont.
Learn methods to cover basic needs of survival in the wilderness — Shelter, Water, Fire, Food and Tools — by using modern and primitive resources. Each class will highlight multiple approaches to meet these basic needs and there will be several opportunities to test gear in the field.
The intent of our fieldcraft series is to build a mindset that increases the capability of survival if confronted with adversity, but to also provide a skillset to work on projects while sitting around the fire at camp, which includes containers and utensils, cordage, friction fire sets, and traps & triggers. We will also highlight medicinal and functional properties of plants in the region.
WHEN:
Saturday, October 21 & Sunday, October 22
Class runs from 9 AM - 4:30 PM each day with a break for lunch (BYO lunch!)
Participants are welcome to camp on-site or head home at the end of the day. (If you camp, we provide dinner & breakfast and can provide a tent & gear if needed.)
WHERE: Raymond Torrey Memorial Shelter, F5FH+P7, Putnam Valley, NY 12533
WHO: Guardians (veterans & first responders) and family / friends may attend with a guardian
Beginners welcome! No prior outdoor skills or camping experience necessary. Our team will help guide you through everything you need to do.
Feel free to join this weekend whether or not you’ve come to any of our past Fieldcraft courses. This is a great opportunity to practice any skills again and learn new ones.
If you are more experienced as a hiker / with outdoor adventures, we’re sure you’ll still learn something new. Jon is a great resource & instructor, and our Another Summit staff have enjoyed trying new things with him during these workshops.
DIFFICULTY: 🟦 Blue (easy)
Blue hikes are great for beginners. These hikes are usually no more than 2 miles on relatively flat and even terrain, although not always wheelchair accessible.
This event has passed, but you can check out similar adventures here!
About the Instructor: Jon Turner
Jon Turner is a veteran and fieldcraft / wilderness survival expert.
Jon was introduced to fieldcraft and wilderness living at a young age and has spent the majority of his life in or near the woods. He served with the Marines between 2003-2007, deploying to Haiti and twice to Iraq. Upon discharge, Jon immersed himself in sustainable food systems and outdoor recreation as a mechanism for reintegration.
Now, Jon and his family operate Wild Roots Community Farm and Accipiter Fieldcraft in Central Vermont, where they teach homesteading, wilderness survival, and self-rescue.
Another Summit
Another Summit organizes and leads outdoor adventure activities — such as walking, hiking, backpacking, and paddling — in the Hudson Valley Region of New York & across the Northeast.
We welcome guardians of all ages and ability levels, including those with accessibility needs, and we work to facilitate access throughout the Hudson Valley and NYC area.
Our outdoor adventures range from beginner to advanced difficulty levels and are led by certified outdoor leaders. Another Summit’s difficulty rating system considers multiple factors, including elevation, terrain, and frequency of rests.
