Our Rating System
Another Summit adventures range from beginner to advanced difficulty levels and are led by certified outdoor leaders.
We welcome guardians of all ages and ability levels, including those with accessibility needs, and we work to facilitate access throughout the Hudson Valley and NYC area.
Our difficulty rating system considers multiple factors, including elevation, terrain, and frequency of rests.
-
🟪 Purple (easiest) ♿
Purple are the easiest out of all the adventure types we offer. They are always wheelchair accessible, usually no more than 1 mile, and on relatively flat, even terrain.
Purple can also include some other outdoor activities like meditation, birdwatching, and fishing.
-
🟦 Blue (easy)
Blue hikes are great for beginners, people short on time, or folks with small children. These hikes are usually no more than 2 miles on relatively flat and even terrain, although not always wheelchair accessible.
Blue can also include activities like outdoor education, yoga, field games, and car-camping.
-
🟩 Green (moderate)
Green hikes are great for beginners, and folks looking to spend a couple hours outside. These are usually between 2-4 miles and can range from short mountain hikes to long relatively flat hikes. Either way, these will be at a slow and steady pace, with time to stop and appreciate nature.
Most paddling (canoeing & kayaking) adventures also fall into this category.
-
🟨 Yellow (moderately strenuous)
Yellow hikes are great for people who are looking to spend a few hours on the trail or get in a light workout. These can range from 1 mile hikes on a difficult trail to 6 mile hikes on an easy trail, always at a natural pace with breaks at least every hour.
Some camping trips and paddling adventures fall into this category.
-
🟥 Red (strenuous)
Red hikes are more difficult and are recommended for experienced hikers or those who are physically fit. These can be fast-paced scrambles up a mountainside, a long 10+ mile hike, or a 4-6 mile hike on a difficult trail. While there is a lot of variety in the type of activity, these hikes will always be more tiring than the others and might involve technical skill.
Most backpacking trips and some activities like trail-running fall into this category.
-
⬛ Black (very strenuous)
Black hikes are the most difficult of them all. These are recommended only for physically fit, experienced hikers.
These will always be physically exhausting activities like running up a steep slope or completing a five-night backpacking trip.
